In an age fascinated with spiritual insight, psychic readings, mediums, and fortune tellers have moved from the fringe to the mainstream. They are marketed as harmless tools for guidance, healing, or self-discovery. Yet Scripture speaks with remarkable clarity on this subject—and its warning is not subtle.
According to the Bible, these practices do not originate with God. They are not alternative paths to truth, nor are they spiritually neutral. Scripture identifies them as deceptive, dangerous, and rooted in spiritual opposition to God.
God’s Clear Prohibition
The Bible does not treat mediums or fortune tellers as misunderstood helpers. It explicitly forbids their practices.
“Do not defile yourselves by turning to mediums or to those who consult the spirits of the dead. I am the Lord your God.”
(Leviticus 19:31, NLT)
This command is not cultural or outdated. It reflects God’s concern for spiritual purity and protection. God does not forbid these practices because He fears competition—He forbids them because they open doors to deception.
Not From God, But From Deceptive Spirits
Scripture consistently teaches that spiritual voices exist outside of God’s authority—and not all spiritual experiences come from Him.
“For Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light.”
(2 Corinthians 11:14, NLT)
The Bible describes Satan as the “father of lies” (John 8:44, NLT). His strategy is not always obvious evil, but subtle distortion—truth mixed with falsehood, insight wrapped in deception.
